Hans Bellmer (German, 1902-75) was born on this day.
"The Doll", 1934, Gelatin silver print, The Cleveland Museum of Art.
Bellmer created some of the most disturbing images in the history of the surrealist movement.
Declaring that he would make no work that would support the new Nazi regime, Bellmer initiated his Dolls project. Represented by mutated forms and unconventional poses, his dolls were directed specifically at the cult of the perfect body promoted by the Nazis. His work was eventually declared "degenerate" and he was forced to leave Germany.
